On August 22, 2017, Mary Mitta officially announced her candidacy for First Selectman after Marion Rios vacated the Republican nomination. Mrs. Mitta released the following statement declaring her bid to return strong, proactive leadership to town hall:
After much consideration, I am extremely excited to be running for the Office of First Selectman for the Town of Stafford. I have lived here for most of my life, have been married to Tony Mitta for 34 years and have raised three sons who have attended local schools. My sense of civil consciousness started early on. Growing up in Staffordville, I have wonderful memories of the Community Center where I attended many events throughout my childhood. Then came the day that they decided that the building had to come down. It was falling apart. I was young, not a teenager yet, but I joined a group to save the Community Center and so it started. Following that, I campaigned with my running mate, John Locke's dad, Peter Locke, for his successful run for State Representative. I was involved with the building of a float for the bi-centennial parade and remember how proud I felt to be a part of something special.
Stafford Republicans, along with everyday citizens and business owners, are proud to stand behind Mary Mitta, who will bring a straight-forward, experienced, and proactive perspective to deal with our town's issues.
We also thank Ms. Rios for her commitment to forwarding our vision and our agenda to build a better future for Stafford.
